Judith Ann Owen Larson
1939 – 2025
Judith Ann Owen Larson, 85, passed peacefully Monday, October 13, 2025, West Valley City, Utah, with her loving husband Tom and family by her side.
Judy, as she was known to most, was born just a few minutes after her twin sister Joan on November 29, 1939, in Chicago, Illinois to John Reuben and Phyllis Williams Owen. The twins were the first of three children. She spent her childhood and early teens in Illinois and Michigan. The family then moved to Lewiston, Idaho when she was 16 years old. She graduated from Lewiston High School.
After graduation she attended Brigham Young University where she met the love of her life, Thomas Owen Larson. Tom and Judy were married on July 15, 1958, in the Idaho Falls Idaho Temple. The early years of marriage brought short stints in Tucson, Arizona and Pullman, Washington before settling in Yuma, Arizona for ten years. While in Yuma they welcomed four children into the family: Thom, Becky, Doug and Dean. In 1972 the family moved to Hunter, Utah, now West Valley City, where they were welcomed into a wonderful neighborhood.
Judy excelled at being a wife and mother. She considered her greatest accomplishment in life her part in raising their children. She discovered special joy in being a grandmother and great-grandmother. She believed that the most precious jewels are not made of stone, but of flesh!
Judy’s desire to serve has always been a part of her life – a desire fulfilled both in church callings and in the community. She served in many capacities in the Young Women program, as a ward and stake Relief Society president among others. She wrote and produced road shows, skits, and programs. She served as ward organist, pianist and accompanist.
In 1981 she took a part-time job as a library aide at a junior high school. The associations there, along with her former PTA and community council work, led her to seek a position on the Granite School District Board of Education in 1986. This became 12 years of service. She was then elected to the Utah State Board of Education.
Nearing completion of her term on the Board and Tom’s retirement from coaching and teaching, they accepted a call for missionary service for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This was one of three missions they served: Cyprus, Sicily, Philadelphia.
Judy is survived by her husband of 67 years, Tom; children Thom (Sherry), Becky (Nu) Tauiliili, Doug (Deanna), and Dean (Summer); sister Joan (Allan) Erickson; brother Jack (Mary) Owen; sister-in-law Lyn (Jim) Downing; sixteen grandchildren, and twenty great-grandchildren.
Funeral service Monday, October 20th, 11:30 a.m., Hunter 14th Ward Chapel, 3460 South 6400 West, West Valley City. Viewings: Sunday, October 19th, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. and Monday, October 20th, 10:30 - 11:15 a.m. Internment Valley View Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Aid Fund or a charity of your choice.
