Kenneth Duane Berg, known affectionately to friends and family as Ken, was called home to his Lord and Savior on October 9, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on April 7, 1942, in San Antonio, Texas, Ken was a man whose life was grounded in faith, family, and service to his country. He passed away peacefully in Ft. Worth, Texas, having lived a life marked by kindness, dedication, and an unwavering faith in God.
Ken's journey began as the beloved son of Evelyn L. Rutherford and Eldon S. Berg. He grew up in the vibrant community of San Antonio, where he graduated from Highland Hills High School in 1960. Ken's youthful passion for music led him to play the trumpet in the high school band. He also became an excellent, self taught guitar player. Additionally, Ken was gifted with a beautiful singing voice. After high school, Ken answered the call of duty by enlisting in the United States Marine Corps in May 1961, where he distinguished himself as an Expert Rifleman during basic training. His patriotic service continued in the Air Force, receiving technical training at Keesler Air Force Base and completing his service at Barksdale Air Force Base in 1965.
Upon returning to civilian life, Ken embarked on a successful career in sales, honing his natural ability to connect with people. His entrepreneurial spirit later inspired him to start his own business, Santone Pest Control, in 1976. Ken's friendly demeanor and faith-filled approach to his work earned him the respect and loyalty of his clients until he retired in the summer of 2018.
Ken's personal life was as full and rich as his professional one. He married Debra Ann Hildebrand on June 1, 1968, and although their paths later diverged, their union was blessed with a daughter, Lisa A. Carpenter. Lisa, along with her husband Joseph R. Carpenter, Jr., and their sons Joseph R. Carpenter III, with his wife Abby, and Travis J. Carpenter, brought the greatest joy to Ken's life. He cherished the last nearly seven years of living close by to spend quality time with them.
A man of deep Christian faith, Ken was an active member of Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, where he served as both an usher and a home ministry leader for many, many years. His gentle spirit and steadfast belief in God's grace were evident to all who knew him. In his leisure time, Ken enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, especially sharing the gift of music with his grandsons from early on in their lives.
Ken's later years were spent in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, where he moved to be closer to his beloved family. Even in retirement, Ken's life was a testament to the values he held dear: his devotion to God, his love for his family, and service to others.
As we bid farewell to Ken, we remember a man whose life was characterized by friendliness, gentleness, and an unwavering faith. He was a light to those around him, a source of comfort and strength. Though we mourn his passing, we take solace in the knowledge that Kenneth Duane Berg has found eternal peace and rest in the arms of his Savior.
Ken's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who knew him, and his example will continue to inspire us to live with kindness, to cherish our loved ones, and to walk humbly with our God. We celebrate the life of a remarkable man, and we entrust him to the Lord's loving embrace, confident in the promise of the resurrection.
A private internment will take place at a later date at the DFW National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to ones favorite charitable organization. A special thanks to Dr. Michael Mattingly of Family Healthcare Associates in Mansfield, TX for his loving and exceptional care of Ken over the years as well as St. Gabriel's Hospice during his last few months.
