Larry A. Aamold

Larry Aamold, Sr., age 88, passed away on October 25, 2025, in Hillsboro, Oregon, with his son, Lee, and daughter, Lesley, by his side.

Born on February 7, 1937, in Clear Lake, South Dakota, Larry was the son of Clarence Aamold and Vivian (Olson Aamold) Peterson. He graduated from Revillo High School in 1955 and went on to earn his degree from South Dakota State University in 1959. His first career out of college was managing a grain elevator in Bath, SD. In 1960, he was drafted into the United States Army, and he proudly served his country for two years.

In 1961, he married Gayle Wheeting in Aberdeen, SD. Larry and Gayle moved to Oregon in 1964 and raised their family in Sherwood, OR. At that time, Larry embarked on a long and distinguished career in banking, working for US National Bank in Portland, OR.

In the Spring of 1979, Larry and Gayle moved their family to Clear Lake, SD, and Larry pursued his lifelong dream of farming —an endeavor that reflected both his industrious spirit and deep connection to the land. In 1985, he resumed his banking career, working for Deuel County National Bank in Clear Lake, SD. He returned to Portland, OR in 1988, rejoining US National Bank.

Larry married Lillian Braverman in 1999. Larry and Lillian traveled to Russia 3 times during their marriage, teaching farming and cooking practices. Lillian passed away in 2014.

After retiring from the banking industry in 2004, Larry established his own agricultural appraisal business. He dedicated another fifteen years to this enterprise—demonstrating the same work ethic and commitment that defined every chapter of his life.

Larry had a passion for exploring the world, and after his wife passed away, he traveled extensively with his special friend, Diane. He was an avid reader who found joy in learning and discovery. These interests enriched his life and conversations with those around him.

Larry was a member of St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church of Beaverton, OR.

Larry is lovingly remembered by his special friend, Diane Kruse (Hillsboro, OR); his sons: Larry Jr. (Hickory, NC) and Lee (Sioux Falls, SD); his daughter: Lesley (Todd) Wolles (Hartford, SD); his ex-wife Gayle (Wheeting) Aamold (Hartford, SD), brothers Carroll (Carol Jean) Aamold (Grand Junction, CO) and David (Sharon) Aamold (Watertown, SD); sister Carolyn Brendsel (Woodbridge, VA); four grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Lillian Braverman; parents Clarence Aamold and Vivian Peterson; brothers Lowell Aamold and Douglas Aamold.

A memorial service will be held at St. Paul’s Lutheran church (Clear Lake, SD) at 10:30 a.m. on November 17.
