Larry Elam Montgomery
May 8, 1946 - November 13, 2025
Larry Elam Montgomery, 79, passed away on November 13, 2025. Born on May 8, 1946, in Bremerton, Washington, Larry spent his youth along the shores of the Puget Sound, growing up in the place that helped shape his character, his values, and his enduring love for community. He graduated from East Bremerton High School before joining the United States Army in 1965.
Larry served his country with exceptional courage during the Vietnam War. His bravery in combat earned him numerous commendations, including the Purple Heart, the Bronze Star, and the Silver Star, among others. Though a man of few words, he possessed a sharp wit, a keen mind, and a steady strength that earned the respect of all who knew him. While being treated for a combat wound in Honolulu, Hawaii, he met his wife Rita. Together they raised three children and were married for 58 years.
At the heart of Larry's life was his deep and unwavering faith. He was a steadfast believer in God and in His son, Jesus Christ, and he lived each day anchored in the hope and promise he found in them. His faith guided his decisions, shaped his character, and fueled his desire to serve others. It was evident in the gentle way he encouraged those around him, in his integrity, and in the quiet steadfastness that defined his life.
Larry extended that same spirit of service to the youth of his community. He loved coaching his sons' baseball, football, and basketball teams, and he volunteered for many years as a referee and umpire. His fairness, patience, and steady leadership left a lasting impression on the young athletes he mentored.
After retiring, Larry and his wife, Rita, moved to Newport, Washington, where they purchased a home along the peaceful banks of the Pend Oreille River. Their home became a cherished gathering place, especially for their grandchildren, who spent many joyful summers there making memories with their grandparents.
In Newport, Larry continued to live out his faith through ministry. He taught Sunday School, participated in church revivals, and quietly supported his church community in countless ways. His devotion to God and his commitment to sharing hope and grace touched many lives.
Larry was predeceased by his parents, Vinita Owens and Clarence Montgomery, and by his sisters, Sandy Albrecht and Mary K. Montgomery. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rita, and their three children: Dana, Micah, and Aaron, all of whom were by his side during his last days. He was a devoted husband, a supportive father, a loving grandfather and great-grandfather, and a steadfast presence to family and friends alike.
A celebration of life service will be held on December 1st at 10:00 a.m. at Harvest Community Fellowship. A military burial will follow at the Veteran's Cemetery in Cheney, Washington, where he will be laid to rest with full military honors.
Larry will be deeply missed, but the legacy he leaves—one of courage, service, faith, and unwavering hope in Christ—will co ntinue to inspire all who were blessed to know him.
