Leonard Kenneth "Lenny" Sackson, affectionately known as Papa, and Lynard Skynyrd, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, in Mesa, Arizona. He was 83 years old.
Born on September 28, 1942, in St. Johns, Newfoundland, Canada, Leonard led a life defined by dedication—to his family, his country, and his work. From an early age, he was determined to build a meaningful life, a name for himself, and provide for those he loved.
Leonard proudly served in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War from 1960 to 1962 aboard the USS Princeton and continued in the Naval Reserves until 1966. During his service, he earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. His military service instilled in him a strong sense of discipline and commitment that shaped his path forward.
After his service, Leonard pursued a successful career in the trucking and logistics industry. He started his career as a truck driver and ended up becoming an owner operator. He spent many long, hard days on the road and often took his children along with him. He eventually owned Matson Truck Lines and later First City Logistics where he worked with his son, Scott. His leadership left a lasting impression on colleagues and clients. During his career, he formed many life-long friendships. He also served as president for the National Perishable Logistics Association where his daughter, Melanie, created the newsletter.
Leonard cherished time with his grandchildren—Sheldon, Taylor, Nick, Alena, and Annalise—and took great joy in watching them pursue their passions. He found happiness in simple pleasures: riding Harley-Davidsons through the country and Arizona's open roads, golfing, boating in earlier years in Minnesota, target shooting, and sharing laughter with family. He also took pride in his involvement with the Superstition HOG Chapter of Apache Junction.
He is lovingly remembered by Janice Sackson, his former wife; their children Scott Sackson and Melanie Sackson Souder; daughter-in-law Meri Sackson; son-in-law Robert Souder; his brother Tim (Calvin) Sackson and his cherished partner Mary Platts.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents Leonard Sr and Joan (Ladlie); sisters Sharon Shaw and Thomasine Bennett; and brother Brian Sackson.
