Louis Thomas Cartolano died peacefully in his home on October 25, 2025 surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Brooklyn, NY on New Year's Day 1934, Lou was a loving, faithful servant of God.
Lou was fantastic with numbers from an early age. While attending Saint John's Preparatory High School, Lou frequently enjoyed afternoons-off after solving an intricate math problem that perplexed other students.
After graduating Lou went to work to help out the family. He landed a job, not surprisingly, as a bookkeeper. While on a smoking break on office building veranda, he realized that he was destined for more. Out-of-character, and partially on-a-whim, he joined the Army during the Korean Conflict, where he setup and worked on Field Communications.
After his honorable discharge, Lou enrolled in college at Brooklyn Polytecnic Institute. After graduation he moved from New York to East Hartford to work for Pratt & Whitney as a mechanical engineer. Later, Lou had the opportunity to work for the newly created Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection Air Monitoring Division. As a department founder, he was flown to California to learn from the California Smog Reduction Act and pilot Connecticut's Clean Air Reduction Act. Lou proudly saw improvement in Connecticut's air quality during his tenure related to his work.
Lou was selfless, and always looking for an opportunity to help others. His involvement in Saint Rose Parish in East Hartford was deep and wide from becoming an Extraordinary Minister of the Eucharist to teaching CCD to church cleaning crew. Outside of church, Lou visited the convalescent home every week for years, visiting with the residents and organizing their weekly Bingo night. Always willing to lend a hand to friends, neighbors, and anyone in need, Lou continued to help others throughout his life. He continues to donate himself, even after death, by donating his body for scientific study. Gracious and humble - that's Lou.
Lou is preceded by his Stepmother Josephine Cartolano, biological mother Rose Cartolano, father Rosario Cartolano, and brother Robert Cartolano. He is survived by his wife of 61 years Ann (DeCarlo) Cartolano, brother Joseph Cartolano, brother-in-law Donald T. DeCarlo, daughter Margaret Cartolano, son John Cartolano and wife Lisa Delventhal and grandson Maximus Cartolano.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Paul Church, 2577 Main Street, Glastonbury, CT 06033.
