Lucas Schmitz, age 23, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at Ascension St. Vincent Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana, with loved ones by his side. Lucas lived a life filled with kindness, a deep sense of community, and infectious joy. He was born on June 22, 2002, in Rockford, Illinois, on a beautiful summer day, and graduated from Jane Addams High School in Chicago, Illinois, as part of the Class of 2020.
It was hard not to smile in Lucas’s presence. His playful spirit and passion for games like Minecraft, Call of Duty, NFL Madden, and NBA 2K helped him forge lasting friendships within a vibrant gaming community. When he wasn’t gaming or connecting with friends, Lucas could be found playing basketball, tutoring children, enjoying Pokémon Go, or finding joy in the simple pleasures of everyday life, like grocery shopping.
Lucas had a deep passion for Dragon Ball Z, Harry Potter, and Star Wars, and was known for his extensive knowledge of these worlds, which he loved sharing with those closest to him.
As an incredible friend, Lucas was often the first person people called when they needed someone to lean on. With his generous and sensitive heart, he had a gift for bringing smiles even in the most challenging situations.
Lucas is survived by his mother, Holly Schmitz of Rockford, Illinois; sisters Jennifer March of Winnebago, Illinois, and Olivia Cardino of Chicago, Illinois; brothers Austin Celner (Dani Celner) of Rockford, Illinois, Evan Lawrence of Jacksonville, Florida, and Nicolas Cardino of Chicago, Illinois; and nephews Aidan, Brenen, and Rowan of Rockford, Illinois. He is also remembered by countless friends and extended family.
Lucas was preceded in death by his grandparents, Joseph Ronga and Shirley Dufoe.
A celebration of life was held on November 2, 2025, at Westlake Village Community Center in Winnebago, Illinois.
Though his time with us was far too short, Lucas’s spirit will continue to inspire love, laughter, and connection in all who carry his memory.
