Margaret Ann Welch Hubert

1929 - 2025

Margaret Ann Welch Hubert lived a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and service. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, in 1929, Margaret graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Home Economics. While returning from studies in Europe, she met the love of her life, "Whitie," on a ship crossing the Atlantic. Together they built a home filled with love, laughter, and purpose, raising five children and nurturing a deep sense of family and community.

Margaret dedicated her time and heart to serving others. She volunteered with numerous organizations, including Meals on Wheels, and joyfully taught Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) classes to children attending public school.

She cherished her years raising her family in Bethesda, where summer days were spent at the Mohican Hills swimming pool. Margaret enthusiastically encouraged all the children to join the swim team and could always be found cheering from the sidelines at weekend meets.

Margaret and Whitie were adventurous spirits. They learned to ski as adults and delighted in taking their children to Vermont and New Hampshire at Christmas time. Easter vacations often meant packing the family of seven into the station wagon for the long drive to Florida. One memorable summer, they explored the country together, visiting national parks for two months with a pop-up tent trailer in tow.

Margaret's love of the beach began in childhood during family trips to Ocean City, Maryland. Later, her "happy place" became South Bethany Beach, Delaware where she continued to create treasured memories with her children and grandchildren.

Her Catholic faith was the cornerstone of her life. From Blessed Sacrament Parish in Chevy Chase, D.C., where she grew up, to Little Flower in Bethesda, where she and Whitie raised their family, and later to St. John the Apostle in Leesburg, Virginia, Margaret's faith guided and sustained her through every season of life.

In their vibrant "retirement," Margaret and Whitie moved to Lucketts, Virginia, where they founded Tarara Winery. Margaret played an active role in the Leesburg community—volunteering with the Leesburg Tourism Board and running a bed and breakfast at the winery.

Following Whitie's passing in 2008, Margaret remained an active member of St. John's, where she cherished her Bible study group and her beloved widows' group, "The Next Chapter."

Margaret is survived by her five children: Karen Harvell (Robert), Martha Hubert (Thom Burnham), Steven Hubert, Janet Nilles (Mike), and Michael Hubert (Susan); her grandchildren Andrea Schlegel and Daniella Allen (children of Steven), Casey DuBois and Jaime Frazer (children of Janet), and Andrew, Melanie, Peter, Richard, and Erica Hubert (children of Michael); and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Whitie Hubert; her grandson, Niel DuBois; and Steven's wife, Isabella Hubert.

Margaret's long and fulfilling life was blessed by the devoted companionship of her dear friend Margie Russell and the loving care of Motalane Tsepetse and Abena Dwommoh.

Her legacy of faith, family, and kindness lives on in all who were fortunate enough to know and love her.
