Marietta Ruth (Byerly) Lazzo, age 86, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025.
Born in Peoria, Illinois, Marietta lived a remarkable and adventurous life filled with love, learning, and laughter. She dedicated over 30 years to teaching, inspiring generations of students with her patience, curiosity, and compassion. Her love for knowledge extended beyond the classroom—she was an avid crossword and cryptogram enthusiast, a devoted listener of classical music, and a lifelong learner who found joy in every new experience.
After retiring from teaching, Marietta embraced new adventures that reflected her fearless and spirited nature. Her sense of wanderlust drew her to the open road. She loved going for long road trips (she even trained to be a long haul trucker), circumnavigated the country by train, and traveled a number of rivers by boat. Her zest for life and boundless curiosity led her to build friendships wherever she went.
Her life was characterized by a strong appreciation for nature, especially animals. She also endeavored to live below her means so she could be generous with causes and people that were important to her. Her lifelong quest for deep spirituality and expressions of love made her a beloved presence in every circle she joined. She truly lived life to the fullest, embracing each chapter with courage and love.
Marietta adored her family and her community. She was preceded in death by her husband, Stefan Lazzo and her granddaughter, Rebecca Lazzo, and is survived by her children Gary (Tracey) Lazzo, Kirsten (John) Heiser, Pat Lazzo, and Erica (Chad) Jones, her stepsons Steve (Ellen) Lazzo and Chris (Joanna) Lazzo, as well as her grandchildren Adrian Nicholson, Kenneth Robinson, Kermit Heiser, Abigail (Heiser) Johnson, Kylie Lazzo, Jacob Jones, Tyler Jones, and Carter Jones, and nine great grandchildren. She also leaves behind many cherished friends and neighbors who were touched by her warmth, humor, and generosity.
Celebrations of her home-going are being planned for her family and close friends. If you feel so led, please make a donation in her memory to your favorite animal charity.
