Mary Owen

Mary Ann Owen (née Johnson), age 92, passed away peacefully on October 13, 2025, in Celebration, Florida.

Born on June 3, 1933, in Morganton, North Carolina, Mary was raised in Asheville by her parents, A.J. and Jessie Johnson. Surrounded by generations of relatives in the Blue Ridge Mountains, she grew up in a close-knit family environment that shaped her deep sense of connection and community.

Mary married J.R. "Jay" Owen Jr., a dedicated career officer in the United States Air Force. Their life together was one of service and exploration, taking them across nine different states and even abroad to Berlin, Germany. After years of travel and adventure, they returned to North Carolina and settled in Asheville—a place that always held a special place in Mary's heart.

A woman of unwavering faith, Mary was an active leader at Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church. Her devotion to God was evident in every aspect of her life and served as a guiding light for those around her. She found joy and purpose within her church community and remained a faithful member throughout her life.

Mary had a remarkable ability to stay connected with those she loved. She cherished long phone conversations with cousins and lifelong friends, nurturing relationships that spanned decades and distances. Her warmth and sincerity left lasting impressions on all who knew her.

She also had a fondness for big dogs and was known for her exceptional cooking skills. Her meals brought comfort and joy to many over the years and became treasured parts of family gatherings.

Mary is lovingly remembered by all her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Jay, her son Jesse, and her parents A.J. and Jessie Johnson.
