Maryann Schmenkel, 82, of Marco Island, Florida, formerly of Woodbridge, New Jersey, passed away peacefully on October 25, 2025.
Born on April 1, 1943, in Carteret, New Jersey, Maryann was the beloved daughter of the late John and Susan Mirda. She graduated from Carteret High School and went on to earn her Bachelor's degree from Monmouth University and her Master's degree from Kean University.
A dedicated and compassionate educator, Maryann spent her career serving the Carteret Public Schools as a speech therapist, where she touched countless lives with her kindness, patience, and encouragement.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, John Schmenkel. Maryann is survived by her three devoted daughters and their husbands, Jacqui and Timothy McGovern, Christina and Charles Elliott, Andrea Schmenkel and Robert Kowal, her cherished grandchildren Lauren and her husband Alex Houston, Jack and his fiancé Emily Hamilton, Grace and Mason Elliott, one precious great-grandson Asher Houston and her dear niece Heather McGregor. She also leaves behind many close friends and extended family members who will forever remember her warmth, humor, and generous spirit.
Maryann loved nothing more than spending time with her family and friends. Her legacy of love, laughter, and compassion will live on in all who knew her.
A celebration of her life will be held November 15th at noon at the United Church of Marco Island. The family wishes to thank AVOW Hospice in Naples, Florida for their kind and gentle care of Maryann.
