Melvin was born July 12, 1943 in Peoria, Illinois to Gene and Zenola (Simms) Irving. He passed peacefully at home on October 4, 2025 with his partner of 46 1/2 years, Jeffrey Moore, and his beloved Yorkie, Mindy, by his side.
In addition to Jeff and Mindy, he is survived by his brothers John Irving of Fort Worth and Stanley Irving of Kansas City, and several nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family. His parents preceded him in death.
Melvin grew up in Peoria, where he and his family attended Mount Zion Baptist Church. He graduated from Peoria Central High School in 1961 and continued his education at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, where he made many life-long friends. After graduation from SIU, Melvin began his 32 1/2 year career at Caterpillar, last working at the Morton parts distribution facility.
After retirement, Melvin, Jeff, and their four beloved dogs relocated to South Florida, living in the Fort Lauderdale area for several years and then later in Martin County. Melvin enjoyed a long and happy retirement in the warm Florida weather. Before and after retirement, he enjoyed traveling, including many trips to California, New York City, Chicago, New Orleans, Vegas, Mexico, and many others.
To all that knew him, Melvin was a kind, considerate man, the true definition of a gentleman in every sense. He was quick to laugh and share a humorous anecdote. In addition to his engaging personality, he was a thoroughly kind and caring person, quietly and modestly donating to many causes, including disaster relief, the homeless, and animal charities.
To honor Melvin’s life and memory, he would want those that are able to donate whatever they can to a local food bank, homeless charity, or animal shelter.
A private service will be held at a later date.
