Merton Lewis Lende, 83, passed away on September 7, 2025, in Woodburn, OR. Born on February 3, 1942, Merton, affectionately known as Mert, was a beacon of kindness and reliability in his community.
Mert's journey through life was marked by his steadfast dedication to both his education and his work. He was a proud graduate of Hudson's Bay High School, where he achieved perfect attendance, a testament to his commitment and discipline. Early in his career, Mert worked various jobs, from picking berries and delivering newspapers, to positions at a Volkswagen garage and a plywood mill. However, he found his calling at Union Pacific Railroad on Swan Island, where he worked as a carman. Mert thrived as part of the "wrecking crew," alongside his partner Dennis, taking pride in cleaning up after train derailments. After retiring, he continued to indulge his love for travel and mechanics by working part-time for Johnson RV, delivering motorhomes and RVs.
Beyond his professional life, Mert was a devoted family man and is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie June (Hoffman) Lende; children, Robin Lende Dodson, Kevin Lende, Kimberly (Lende) Goss, and Melissa Lende; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and six nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin Olaf Lende and Myrtle Elizabeth (Adams) Lende; his brother, Russell Lende; and grandparents, John and Ellen Adams.
Mert was known for his jovial spirit and his hobbies, which ranged from carpentry and auto mechanics to photography. He was particularly fond of his Vespa during his high school years, later replaced by a Volkswagen Bug. His "Potato Gun" was a source of joy not only for him but also for those around him, as he loved to entertain with his homemade contraption.
Merton Lende will be remembered as "Good People," always ready with a joke or a story, and ever eager to lend a hand. His legacy of kindness, humor, and community involvement will continue to inspire those who knew him.
