Michael D. “Mike” Dyer, 83, of Seymour, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on October 6, 2025, surrounded by his wife Janet and their daughters, Linda and Sherri. Mike was many things—ornery, creative, curious, stubborn, funny, and endlessly kind. Those who knew him could always tell when he was up to no good - that signature smirk gave him away every time. He was a man who never met a stranger and never missed a chance for conversation—or a good laugh.
Mike was born on August 17, 1942, in Washington, Indiana, to Erma and Harve Dyer. He grew up in the rural stretches of Washington, where days were spent outdoors, running around with his buddies, and getting into just enough mischief to keep life interesting. He graduated from Washington High School in 1960, carrying with him the small-town roots and steady values that shaped him for a lifetime.
On September 9, 1959, Mike married the love of his life, Janet Miller. For 66 years, they were not just husband and wife, but best friends and soulmates—the kind that could only be described as a blessing from God. Whether it was morning coffee on the couch watching the sunrise, or adventures across the country in their motorhome, Mike and Janet were happiest side by side. He was her biggest fan, especially in her pursuit of music. His greatest joy was simple—sharing his life with Janet, his best friend. Together, they built a love story marked by laughter, faith, and a whole lot of adventures.
Mike spent 30 years working for Cummins in maintenance before retiring in 1994. Never one to sit still, he and Janet fulfilled their travel dreams and hit the open road, proudly living by their motto: “Just Passin’ Through.” For nearly 20 years, they traveled the country, met lifelong friends, and witnessed the beauty of God’s creation from coast to coast.
Mike was a longtime member of Rockford Community Church, where he found fellowship, faith, and a community who adored him. He lived his faith in simple, powerful ways—through kindness, generosity, and the way he cared for his family and friends.
Mike loved deeply, laughed loudly, and gave freely. He was proud beyond words of his family and the love that continues to grow from it. He will be deeply missed.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Janet Dyer; daughters Linda Rister and Sherri (Rick) Boeding; grandchildren Nicki (Ben) Haas, Bri (Andrew) Adams, Jessica Rister, and Megan Walter; and great-grandchildren Jayce, Amiri, Jahzara, Konor, Brooklynn, Amiya, Irelynd, and Koen.
He was preceded in death by his siblings John, Jackie, Sharon; in-laws Ray Miller, Romona Miller, Don Miller, Sandy Miller, and Bea Miller; son-in-law Brian Rister; and his lifelong best friends, Don Culp and George Tomey, with whom he shared countless laughs and adventures.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025, where stories, laughter, and probably a few “Michael!” moments will be shared in gratitude for a life well lived and a faith well kept. Family and friends are invited to join us at Rockford Community Church, 1934 N. Ewing Street, Seymour, IN, for the visitation starting at 1:00 pm until the service begins at 3:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Our Hospice of South Central Indiana or Rockford Community Church.
