George Michael "Mike" Boswell, known for his spirited, principled, ambitious, and patriotic character, lived life to its fullest as an avid sportsman, loyal friend and family man. He departed peacefully on August 7, 2025 surrounded by family in his beloved home state of Texas where he was a fifth generation Texan at 85 years of age. He was known as "Bos" to his closest of friends, and as G. Michael to many others. Mike was devoted to family, always supporting his children and grandchildren in their endeavors. A grand storyteller and a lively conversationalist, he delighted in the company of others. He had an encyclopedic and endless knowledge of the history of Texas, its families, and entrepreneurial titans, and even to the end, his recall of details, people and historical events was extraordinary.
Mike, the only child of Mary Delilah "Lila" Manning and George Washington "Jake" Boswell, Jr., was born on April 20, 1940 in Wills Point, Texas. He attended the Marion Military Institute in Alabama for high school. This is where he graduated and made the greatest of lifelong friends, and later served on the school board. Mike attended Southern Methodist University where he was a Phi Delt and continued to create the strongest of bonds with his peers. It was there where he met Sandra Stewart from Dallas, the love of his life.
After earning both a Bachelor of Business Administration from Southern Methodist University in 1967 and a law degree from SMU Law School, he began his professional career as an attorney in Dallas with Akin, Vial, Hamilton, Koch & Tubb. He soon shifted his focus to the business world, serving as Senior Vice President and General Counsel of du Pont Glore Forgan from 1972 to 1974, and then as Executive Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and Director of Great Western United Corporation from 1974 to 1977. He went on to lead the Idaho-based Sunshine Mining Company as Chief Executive Officer, President, and Chairman until 1993. From 1998 to 2008, he worked alongside T. Boone Pickens as a Principal at TBP Investments Management, LLC. Refusing to retire, he joined Hunt Consolidated, Inc. as a Senior Vice President, where he helped launch an alternative energy subsidiary focused on wind and hydroelectric projects. In addition to his corporate work over the years, he also worked with his son in the aquaculture industry running Fish Ranches of Texas outside of Houston. Every bit of his spare time was spent on the water and off of the coast of South Padre Island, in his tireless and fierce pursuit of the great blue marlin and the ever elusive silver king tarpon.
Mike is survived by his wife, Sandy, and their three children: Jefferson M. Boswell and his wife Dee, Julie Boswell Holmquest and her husband Charles, Jennifer Boswell Pickens and her husband Bryan; ten grandchildren: Virginia Boswell Thompson and her husband Overton, Kate Boswell Weaver and her husband Graeme, Emily Boswell Talkington and her husband Jack, Taylor Holmquest Young and her husband Wade, George Michael Holmquest, Ashlee Cody Holmquest, Abigail Elizabeth Pickens, Margaret Manning Pickens, Caroline Tate Pickens and Elizabeth Boswell Pickens, and Great Grandchild Overton Thompson, V.
