Dr. Nicholas Joseph Maldari, a Korean War Veteran, died on November 6th, 2025 surrounded by his loving family at the age of 96. While growing up in lower Manhattan, his early years were shaped by his loving family, as well as The Boys Club of New York. Not only did this club teach him lifelong lessons, but it shaped his values and outlook throughout his entire life. Nicholas graduated from Cardinal Hayes High School and went on to attend SUNY Cortland for his undergrad. He graduated from NYU with a Masters of Arts in Education in 1957 and received his Doctorate from University of Maryland in Education in 1971. Nicholas fought in the Korean War in the Heavy Mortar Company, 179th infantry regiment from 1952 to 1954. At NYU, he met the love of his life, Ellen Morales, with whom he shared 68 beautiful years.
Nick started his career as an educator in New Jersey and continued to become a Principal, a Superintendent and finally a Director of the Board of Education in Trenton, NJ.
He dedicated his life to his family and his career and always had time to discuss a broad range of topics with anyone interested in listening. He was always there to teach his grandchildren life lessons and made sure he was there to always support them. From helping with homework, to teaching them how to ride a bike, walking them to piano class, and even cracking jokes that will be shared forever, Nicholas made sure he was an integral part of his granddaughters' lives.
He is survived by his loving wife, Ellen, his two incredible sons, John (Kathy) and Stephen (Dolly), his sister Ann, and his three grandchildren who he adored: Alexandra, Gianna, Isabella. He was blessed to share 5 amazing years with his great-granddaughter, Beckett. He had a wonderful caretaker, Dana, during the last few years of his life. The Maldari family is extremely grateful for her and the support she continues to provide for Ellen. He is preceded by his father, Raffele, his mother, Maria, and sister Connie.
Nicholas leaves behind a legacy defined by devotion, integrity, and an unwavering love for those around him. His life's work as a soldier, educator, mentor, husband, father, and grandfather, touched countless hearts and shaped generations. To those who knew him, he was a steady source of wisdom, patience, and warmth, always ready with a story, a lesson, or a gentle word of encouragement. Though he will be deeply missed, the values he lived by and the love he gave so freely will continue to guide and inspire his family. In honoring his memory, we celebrate a life lived with purpose, gratitude, and extraordinary grace.
The Maldari Family will be holding a private ceremony for Nicholas, and will be hosting a Celebration of Life in the next coming months. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Boys Club of New York in Nicholas' honor. https://bcny.org/support/donate/
