Nicholas "Nick" Roush, 75, passed away on August 12, 2025, in Lesvos, Greece. Born on September 6, 1950, in Sunbury, Pennsylvania, to Harry and Anna (Orphan) Roush. Nick lived a life defined by compassion, service, and an unwavering commitment to social justice and community.
Nick earned his bachelor's degree from Ursinus College and went on to complete a master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Social Justice. These academic pursuits laid the foundation for a remarkable career as a Psychiatric Social Worker in the Philadelphia Prisons system. For over 38 years, he served with dedication and empathy, becoming affectionately known as "Doctor Nick" to many whose lives he touched. He also impacted the lives of numerous families at the West Philadelphia Community Center's Crime Prevention program though his advocacy and mentoring.
A man of many talents and ventures, Nick once owned and operated the Germantown Cheese store in Maplewood Mall. Earlier in life, he served as a Merchant Marine with the Red Stack tug line, transporting materials for the Alaskan Pipeline to Prudhoe Bay—an experience that reflected his adventurous spirit.
Nick's love for people was evident in every facet of his life. He had an extraordinary gift for connecting with others—meeting them where they were and listening intently to their stories. Whether through his professional work or volunteer efforts, he consistently sought to uplift those around him. He volunteered with numerous organizations including Love Kitchen at Mt Tabor AME Church, Lighthouse Refugee Relief in Lesvos, Greece, Neighbors Community Program, Bread and Roses Community Fund, and served as Judge of Elections for his ward for over a decade.
A proud resident of Germantown in Philadelphia, Nick poured his heart into revitalizing his neighborhood. He and Joan rehabilitated his own 150-year-old home along with five other properties on his block. As Block Captain for many years and a Tree Tender with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society program, he worked tirelessly to beautify and strengthen his community.
Nick was also an avid marathon runner who completed eight marathons—including the historic 100th Boston Marathon—a testament to both his physical endurance and mental tenacity. A passionate traveler drawn especially to Greece—the homeland of his grandfather—he found joy exploring new places and cultures. His love of nature was matched only by his love of storytelling; those who knew him will remember countless tales told with warmth and humor.
He is survived by his beloved wife and life partner Joan; cherished daughter Dawn Roush; brothers Harry Roush of Vermont and William Roush; as well as many nieces and nephews who will carry forward his legacy of kindness and curiosity. He was predeceased by his sister Gail Roush.
