Red was born 05/28/1935 in Wellington Kansas and
Died 10/22/2025 at home, in Carson City, NV. He was raised in Caldwell, KS and Oceanside, CA, enjoying varsity sports in both. He then attended Oceanside Community College and joined the Navy in 1956, serving in flight school in Pensacola and later on the USS Princeton in the Pacific.
On December 26, 1956, Red married his high school sweetheart, JoAn Lasiter and shared the next 60 years with the love of his life, where they had three children, Tom, Tammy (died from SIDS) and Teresa.
After the Navy, Red worked for Peter Kiewit & Sons, where he learned his craft, building Camp Pendleton barracks, and concrete siphon barrels and a pumping plant. Red and JoAn then moved to Hawaii to work for Charles Pankow Builders as a Project Superintendent. He built many amazing structures in the Islands including Century Center, Waikiki Landmark and the Sheraton Waikoloa. Red was a master with concrete construction and truly loved working beside and mentoring countless young men over the years. He had a charming, boyish sense of humor and enjoyed interacting with all people who shared his work ethic and family values.
In 1993, they retired and moved to Carson City, NV and then in 1994 Red and Tom founded Metcalf Builders. They built MBI into a prominent local general contractor before Red retired again in 2008.
Red and JoAn celebrated their 50th Anniversary on a three-week cruise through the Panama Canal. He enjoyed bowling, golf and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Red’s enthusiasm and positive energy left everybody he dealt with feeling good. His presence will be deeply missed.
Red was preceded in death by JoAn and his older brother Ray. He is survived by his sister Nancy, his children Tom (Rhonda) and Teresa (Kirk Lyon), 5 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. There will be a celebration of life on January 24, 2026 in Carson City, NV. at Red’s Old 395 in Carson City from 11:00am until 1:00pm .
