Patricia Ruth Martinsen, 74, of Rockville, Maryland, passed away on October 31, 2025, surrounded in love by her family. She was married almost 52 years to her beloved husband David.
Pat's lifelong love of learning led her to master's degrees in education, teaching English as a foreign language, and library science, and a career as a classroom teacher, an ESL teacher, and a media center specialist for elementary school kids. She enjoyed bringing learning and excitement to her two grandchildren, even coming out of "retirement" to coordinate the preschool education of her granddaughter during the pandemic.
She was a long-time member of Cedar Ridge Community Church, and an active member of the Ingleside King Farm community, helping with tech support, serving on the library committee, and supporting her many friends.
A caring and compassionate friend, she was always sensitive about what people were going through and proactively offered help and support in big and small ways.
A booklover, she was a member of four book clubs, and enjoyed sharing her love of books with her grandchildren and grandnephews - who knew her as BG (Book Grandma).
She loved to travel, see people, places, art, classical music, and food around the world, and especially enjoyed visiting her son and daughter-in-law in Beijing.
Pat leaves behind her loving husband, David, children Joel (Alice) and Kristi (Geoff), grandchildren Owen and Alina, siblings Jim (Jan) Bostrom, B (Steve) Messer, Jack (Penni) Bostrom, siblings-in-law (Judy and Javier Nieves and Carol and Keith Bergen), as well as extended family and many friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, November 14 at 11am at Cedar Ridge Community Church, 2410 Spencerville Rd, Spencerville, MD 20868, and by Zoom. Details can be found at https://www.crcc.org.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her honor may be made to Cedar Ridge Community Church, or to a charity of your choice.
