A Century of Sparkle: Celebrating the Life of Phyllis Roberson Bauernschmidt
Phyllis Roberson Bauernschmidt, a woman whose spirit sparkled brighter than a Broadway marquee, took her final curtain call on October 26, 2025, after a short stay in Hospice. Born in 1925 in Bayonne, NJ, to the late Horace and Elsie Roberson, Phyllis lived a life filled with curiosity, accomplishment, and an unwavering love for family and adventure. Though predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years, George W. Bauernschmidt Jr. (d. 2013), older sister, Janet Roberson Worthington (d. 1994), and younger brother, Horace Roberson Jr. (d. 1953), her memory shines ever so brightly.
Even from a young age, Phyllis was destined for great things. A brilliant mind and dedicated student, she graduated as valedictorian of her high school before heading to Wellesley College in 1942 to explore the depths of Biblical Studies. Ever practical, she also honed her secretarial skills at Katharine Gibbs, embarking on a career that saw her rub elbows with some of the city's more influential figures.
In the vibrant 1950s, Phyllis brought her charm and flair to Bonwit Teller in New York City, selling apparel with her signature panache. But her greatest adventure began in 1957 when she married the love of her life, George W. Bauernschmidt Jr. Together, they built a beautiful life and family in Severna Park, MD, raising five wonderful children: George W. Bauernschmidt III, Janet Diane Bauernschmidt Gill, Emilie Ann Bauernschmidt Langfitt, Nancy Lee Bauernschmidt Kasner, and James R. Bauernschmidt.
Never one to stop learning, Phyllis earned her Masters in Liberal Arts from Johns Hopkins University in 1971, showcasing her intellectual curiosity and drive. She channeled her energy into a successful career in real estate, first at Giddings & Associates and later at O'Conner, Piper, & Flynn, where she helped countless families find their dream homes until her well-deserved retirement in 2000.
Phyllis embraced life with joy and enthusiasm. She loved to dance, moving her body to the beat of aerobic dance for many years. She had a special fondness for elephants, a love ignited at the tender age of seven when she witnessed their majestic performance at Barnum & Bailey in Madison Square Garden. These incredible creatures mirrored her strength, grace, and gentle spirit.
Above all, Phyllis was devoted to her family. She treasured every moment spent with them. She was also an avid traveler, always eager to explore new places and cultures. But her heart always belonged to NYC, where she celebrated her monumental 100th birthday with her loved ones this past June. Her century milestone was a testament to her remarkable spirit and zest for life.
Phyllis leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and unwavering devotion. She is survived by her five children, ten cherished grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren, all of whom will carry her memory in their hearts forever.
Join us in celebrating Phyllis's extraordinary life at a memorial service on December 6th at 11:00 AM at St. James Episcopal Church in Monkton, MD. Let us remember her not with sadness, but with joy and gratitude for the century of sparkle she brought into our lives.
