Phyllis “Jean” McLain (née Evans), age 90, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, in Krum, Texas. Born on October 23, 1934, in Hawkins, Texas, Jean lived a long and full life marked by devotion to her family, steadfast faith, and an unwavering work ethic.
A proud graduate of Hawkins High School, Jean carried the values of her upbringing into every chapter of her life. She dedicated herself to public service and worked diligently at the Denton County Sheriff’s Office as a jailer until the remarkable age of 80. Her commitment to her role and community was a testament to her strength and resilience.
Jean was deeply rooted in her faith and was a devoted member of First Baptist Church in Lake Dallas, Texas. Her spiritual life provided a foundation for the love and guidance she offered to those around her.
She was the beloved matriarch of her family—a role she embraced with fierce love and enduring support. Jean is survived by her son Terry Spence and his wife Lisa; daughter Kathryn Olivas and her husband David; brother Jesse Evans and his wife Lois; sister Ruth Evans; grandchildren Heath Spence, Jordan Spence (Sara), Gary Spence (Jaymi), Brittney Stanford (Stephen) and Lance Stanford; as well as eleven great-grandchildren who brought immense joy to her life.
Jean was preceded in death by her husband James McLain; sons Gary Spence and Dell McLain; and nineteen siblings whose memories she carried with her throughout life.
Her legacy lives on through the generations she nurtured with strength, compassion, and unwavering dedication. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her.
