Ramona "Mona" Horton, 68, of Gary, Indiana, passed away peacefully in her sleep on October 15, 2025, in her hometown. A devoted mother, nurse, and educator, Ramona will be remembered for her gentle spirit, her compassion, and her unwavering dedication to helping others.
Born on June 22, 1957, in Gary, Indiana, Ramona was the beloved daughter of the late Rev. E.B. and Florence Joyner. She grew up surrounded by faith, family, and a deep respect for education and service—values that would guide her throughout her life. After graduating from West Side High School, Ramona attended Indiana University Northwest, where she earned her bachelor's degree in nursing.

Ramona found her calling in healthcare, dedicating 28 meaningful years to Methodist Hospital Northwest, many of them spent in the labor and delivery department. Her calm presence and expert care brought comfort to countless families during the most important moments of their lives. Later in her career, she shared her experience and love of nursing as an instructor at Ivy Tech Community College, inspiring and guiding the next generation of nurses.

On August 20, 1989—her father's birthday—Ramona married the love of her life, Joseph Horton. Their marriage was a partnership built on deep love and mutual respect. Together, they raised one son, DeAndre, who was Ramona's greatest joy and pride.

Ramona's life was rich with passions: she adored music, delighted in collecting vintage cookie jars and Black women in nursing figurines, and cherished her whimsical collection of Maxine comic memorabilia. Her home was a reflection of her warmth, humor, and curiosity.
Ramona was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph; her parents; and her siblings, Apostle Ernest, Dr. John, and Elise. She is survived by her loving son, DeAndre Horton, who carries forward her compassion and love for life. Along with two grand children, Cyniah and Aedyn, sister in laws, a host of nieces and nephews and many family and friends.
