Richard Harry "Poppie" Bickel, 88, of Sandy, Utah, passed away peacefully on October 14, 2025, surrounded by family.
Born on April 26, 1937, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, Richard's life was marked by devotion—to his country, his work, and above all, his family. He met the love of his life, Gayle (Strickler) Bickel, in the 10th grade while sitting beside her in band class at John Harris High School. Their bond would become the foundation of a lifelong partnership filled with adventure and unwavering commitment.
While still in high school, Richard joined the Junior Reserves and worked part-time at the American Can Company. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Air Force and soon married Gayle. The newlyweds began their life together overseas in Wiesbaden, Germany, where they embraced the opportunity to travel throughout Europe. In 1959, they welcomed their first daughter, Barbara.
Upon returning to the United States, Richard and his growing family settled in Linglestown, Pennsylvania. There he resumed work at American Can Company full-time while pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering at Penn State University. During this time, their family grew to include two more daughters—Debra and Karen.
Richard's professional journey took him across the globe and across cultures. His career led the family to new homes in Streetsboro, Ohio; Guaynabo, Puerto Rico; Penfield, New York; and ultimately Sandy, Utah. His work also brought him to Saudi Arabia, Mexico, and Canada—each destination adding depth to a life rich with experience.
A man of deep values and quiet strength, Richard raised his daughters with faith and purpose. He led by example—instilling independence and a strong work ethic while emphasizing the importance of unity and love within the family. His loyalty was steadfast; he was always present when needed most.
Richard had a profound appreciation for nature and adventure. An avid outdoorsman throughout his life, he found joy in fishing trips, hunting excursions, snorkeling adventures, hiking trails with loved ones, and countless camping outings with family. Remarkably active well into his later years, he continued skiing until the age of 80.
He is survived by his three daughters: Barbara (John), Debra (Peter), and Karen (Steve); his brother Harry Bickel Jr., of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania; ten grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren. He now reunites with his beloved wife Gayle and grandson Nicholas.
Private funeral services will be held for immediate family.
Richard's legacy lives on through those who knew him—a testament to a life well-lived with integrity, devotion, and love. May his memory bring comfort to all who cherished him.
