Richard Johnston

1943 - 2025

Richard Johnston passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on July 3, 1943 in Essex Fells, New Jersey to William Saunderson Johnston and Elinor Fowler Johnston.

He is remembered with love by his wife Margaret, his daughter Samantha and her husband Justin, daughter Kate and her husband Adam, his son James and cherished grandson Leo, and his siblings Barbara Rodgers and Robert Johnston and their families.

Richard was a proud graduate of the Lawrenceville School and Colgate University class of '66. He enjoyed an exceptional track career at both schools and earned All American honors twice and still holds records in the 400-meter hurdles and 4x400 yard relay. He was inducted and remains in the Colgate Athletics Hall of Honor.

Richard started his career at Franklin National Bank, moving on to Eberstadt Asset Management, where he became Senior V.P. and Director while earning his MBA at NYU. In 1985 he founded Johnston Asset Management, now Hardman Johnston Global Advisors. The firm grew from a 3-person startup to the successful firm it is today and is being carried forward by his partners.

Richard was devoted to his family, was a loyal friend and respected businessman known for his integrity, his kindness, determination and generosity and his commitment to his employees and his family.

Richard was an adventurer. He loved nothing more than sailing his beloved boat, Orion. His fearless side led him to jump from planes, race cars and boats and enjoy parasailing, skiing Snowbird, and scuba diving. An avid traveler, he was never happier than when on journeys with family and friends and shared unforgettable trips to Europe, India, Peru, South Africa and more. He took up golf late in life and enjoyed the camaraderie and the challenge. After retiring at age 80, he could be found on the course or driving range perfecting his swing and he loved playing at his home in the desert and near his family cottage in Michigan.

Richard's was a life well lived and his legacy is one of quiet strength, hard work, deep love and unwavering dedication to his family, friends and employees. His wisdom, warmth and generosity will be missed, and he will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.

A memorial will be planned in future.
