Richard Harvey Raphael
Richard “Dick” Raphael, the son of the late William and Mollie (Proller) Raphael, passed away peacefully on October 15th.
Dick is survived by his son, Douglas Russell of Newington; his partner, Suzanne Miller of West Hartford; four beloved grandchildren; and a legion of dear friends.
A graduate of Suffield Academy and the University of Connecticut, Dick went on to establish the highly successful Jones, Raphael & Oulundson Insurance Agency. Under his leadership, the firm became one of the most respected agencies in Hartford County.
While his professional achievements were many, Dick’s true passion was serving his community. His lifelong goodwill and generosity touched countless lives. He served as a board member of the New Britain YMCA, an active member of the New Britain Police Commission, a corporator of New Britain General Hospital, and president of the New Britain Independent Insurance Agents Association. He also chaired several United Jewish Appeal fundraising campaigns, reflecting his deep commitment to helping others.
Later in life, Dick devoted much of his time to volunteering with hospice programs in both Connecticut and Florida, offering compassion and comfort to those facing life’s most difficult moments.
Despite his many public commitments, Dick’s greatest joy came from his family. He was a loving father and grandfather whose happiness was rooted in the well-being of those he loved. Generous, kind, and endlessly caring, Dick was always ready to lend a hand or a listening ear.
In his leisure time, and especially during his well-earned retirement, Dick enjoyed golfing and socializing with friends at Shuttle Meadow Country Club in Kensington, Connecticut, and Eastpointe Country Club in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, both of which he was a proud and active member.
Over his 92 remarkable years, Dick built a lasting legacy of selflessness, dedication, humility, and generosity. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
