Robert A. Freedman

Robert A. Freedman passed away peacefully on September 22 at the age of 89 — or, as Bob would have said, in his 90th year.

Born in New York City to Harold and May Freedman on July 18, 1936, Bob graduated from Swarthmore College in 1958 and from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1961. He married Beth Freedman (née Stevens) the following year, and together they welcomed their daughter, Rachel. After Beth’s passing, Bob found love again with Marisa Harris, whom he married in 1983. Together, they raised a loving blended family of Bob’s daughter, Rachel, and Marisa’s daughters Jenna and Samara.

An esteemed literary agent, Bob began his career working alongside his father at the Harold Freedman Dramatic Agency, founded in 1928. In 1966, he took over the agency, eventually transforming it into the Robert A. Freedman Dramatic Agency. Under his leadership, he represented many of the theatre world’s most respected playwrights and estates. Known for his integrity, kindness, and unwavering dedication, Bob was not only an agent but a confidant, advocate, and friend to generations of writers and colleagues.

Bob loved a good story and a great conversation. His humor, warmth, and generosity of spirit were constants in both his personal and professional life. A proud graduate of the George School and Swarthmore College, he cherished the lifelong friendships he built there and rarely missed a reunion.

Bob is survived by his wife, Marisa Harris; daughter, Rachel Freedman; stepdaughters, Jenna Cohen (Jamie) and Samara Harris; and grandchildren Abigail, Charlotte, Annelise, Hugh, and Elsa.
He is also remembered by his extended family at the Robert A. Freedman Dramatic Agency, Brandt & Hochman Literary Agency, and by the countless writers, producers, and theatre professionals whose lives he touched.
