Ruth Maltenfort Messineo — wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and lifelong learner and teacher — died Monday, October 20, the way she always hoped to: quietly, and at home surrounded by loved ones. For many years, her surviving daughters, Susan Feld and Barbara Hart, tried to convince her to move closer to them in TX or FL but Ruth wouldn’t hear of it. Passaic County, NJ had been her home for 90 + years, and she wasn’t about to leave it.

Born on February 17, 1928, in Passaic, NJ Ruth grew up immersed in the Jewish community at the “Y” and at Bnai Jacob, the spiritual home of her parents Abraham and Rose Maltenfort. She was a founding member of Temple Beth Shalom and later joined Temple Ner Tamid.

Ruth earned a full academic scholarship to Montclair State University, where she studied English, receiving a master's degree. Her teaching career began in Irvington and continued in Clifton and Passaic. She retired as an administrator in the Passaic Public School system. Ruth volunteered at Beth Shalom Temple Sisterhood as its president, and additionally fundraised for the construction of the building, as one of the founding families. Another volunteer role she played was serving as president of Zonta International, an organization that empowers women. She spent her retirement years visiting out-of-town grandchildren, enjoying reading, playing bridge and mahjong, traveling on girls’ weekends with her daughters, and FaceTiming with her great-grandkids.

Ruth is survived by her daughters Susan (Jeffrey Feld) and Barbara (William Hart); 4 grandchildren Randall, Jennifer, Jesse, and Pamela; and 4 great-grandchildren.
Although she outlived many friends, she is still mourned by so many — as a dear friend, mother, and confidante. Her wit, her style, her sass, her love will long endure. May her memory be a blessing.

For those interested, donations may be made to Temple Ner Tamid.
