1961 - 2025

Sandra-Lee "Sandy" Powers, age 64, passed away on September 25, 2025, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Born on January 9, 1961, in Detroit, Michigan, Sandy lived a life marked by dedication to her work, generosity toward her family, and a passion for building—both in the physical world and in the lives of those around her.

A graduate of Cousino High School's Class of 1979, Sandy went on to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science from Oakland University. Her professional journey began at Volkswagen but found its true home at Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan. There, she built a long and impactful career as a computer programmer and later as a team leader. Sandy took great pride in her team's accomplishments and was known for mentoring many colleagues throughout her tenure. Her leadership was defined by diligence, humor, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

After retiring early from her successful IT career, Sandy channeled her energy into home renovation projects—a lifelong passion that showcased both her technical skill and creative spirit. She renovated numerous homes almost entirely on her own, mastering everything from drywall and tile work to minor plumbing and electrical tasks. More than just a hobbyist, Sandy loved teaching others how to tackle their own home repairs and generously offered her time and expertise to help friends and family with their projects.

Sandy shared a rich life with her beloved spouse Leslie Selden. Together they traveled the world on cruises and made countless joyful memories during trips to Disney World. Closer to home, they enjoyed camping adventures across state parks with friends and cherished happy hours spent together on the patio.

Family was central to Sandy's life. She played an instrumental role in raising her nieces Elizabeth Henry and Sarah Ritenour, as well as her nephew John Powers, guiding them from childhood into adulthood with love and steadfast support. Her generosity extended beyond emotional care—she provided housing, financial assistance for college expenses, and unwavering encouragement through every stage of their lives.

Sandy is survived by her spouse Leslie Selden; stepchildren Austin Selden, Angela Welters (Jon Welters), and Rose Temple (Alex Temple); grandchildren Mary Welters and Henry Welters; nieces Elizabeth Henry and Sarah Ritenour (Jason Willis); nephew John Powers (Valerie Powers); grandnieces Alyssa Henry, Avery Henry, Lacey Ritenour, Hailey Powers; grandnephews Mason Henry, Sylas Ritenour, John Powers; as well as many others whose lives were touched by her kindness.

She was preceded in death by her parents John and Patricia Powers and her brother Kevin Powers.

Sandy was a registered organ donor and saved the lives of four people through the Gift of Life with her kidneys, liver, and a lung. Her corneas also gave the gift of restored sight for an individual.

Sandy will be remembered for her strength of character, sharp wit, generous heart, and the countless ways she supported those around her—whether through mentorship at work or hands-on help at home. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew and loved her. A Celebration of Life will be held on November 15, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Rosedale Gardens Presbyterian Church 1901 Hubbard. Visitation at 10:00 am, Service at 11:00 am
