Selma Swartz Bromberg

2025

Selma Swartz Bromberg, an exceptional artist, printmaker, teacher, parent, sister, and friend, bravely fought Parkinson's Disease with a sketchbook in her hands until the end on October 27 at her home in Arlington. She was 85.
Selma chose a printing press over a diamond engagement ring when Nathan Bromberg gave her the choice, as he proposed to her. When Mr. Bromberg died in 1979, she carried on with determination, maintaining a fully equipped printmaking studio that she had built in the basement of their home in Weston, Massachusetts.
She was a trusted source of creative advice and inspiration in numerous professional circles, including the Experimental Etching Studio, Boston Printmakers, DeCordova Museum Loan Program, and the Medici Society of the Museum of Fine Arts. For many years, she taught with patience and generosity at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education, where her students valued both her technical knowledge and her insightful encouragement.
Collections of Selma's work are held by Harvard University's Fogg Museum, the Boston Public Library, Smith College, the Worcester Art Museum, and the Federal Reserve Bank, among many others. Her career was marked by extensive solo, group, and juried exhibitions throughout New England, New York, and the United Kingdom. She also served as a resident artist at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts, the Vermont Studio Center, and Canada's Gros Morne National Park.
Selma and her sister were raised in Lowell by their parents, Jacob Swartz, and Edith Filler. Selma graduated from Lowell High School and earned a B.A. in Studio Art from Smith College. She then received her M.F.A. from Tufts University and the School of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
Selma is survived by her daughter, Sarah Bromberg, an associate professor of art; her son, Daniel Bromberg, a computer consultant, and his wife, Peining Lo-Bromberg; her grandson, Reuben; her sister, Marilyn Swartz-Lloyd; and many beloved cousins, students and friends.
A funeral service will be held at the Schlossberg Chapel, 824 Washington Street, Canton, Mass, 02021 on Thursday, October 30 at 11 AM.
