Steven (Steve) Robert Nelsen

Steven (Steve) Robert Nelsen passed away on October 10th, 2025 in Salt Lake City, UT at the age of 63. Steve was born March 29th, 1962 in Minnesota. He is preceded in death by his parents, Robert (Bob) and Lois Nelsen. Survived by his four children, Alex DeValk, Katie Nelsen, Haley Nelsen, and Jett Nelsen; two step-daughters Brianne Woltering and Brittany Phipps; and sisters Donna Nelsen, and Nancy (Eric) Nelsen-Flom; and his loving wife, Maria Urbano.

Steve was adopted at five months old and became the middle child and only son of Bob and Lois Nelsen. Steve grew up in Crystal, MN and spent most of his free time skiing, swimming, riding bikes, and spending time in the outdoors.

Steve attended the University of North Dakota where he received a bachelor’s degree in business marketing and met Erlene Schwartz (formerly Nelsen/Sigdahl), whom he would later marry in 1985. They were married for 17 years. They had their first daughter together in 1990, followed by identical twin daughters in 1993. Together, Erlene and Steve purchased a hobby farm in Dayton, MN in 1997. Steve spent countless hours taking care of the animals and maintaining the property all the while being a father, ski instructor, and working at the family flooring business: Redmann’s in Anoka, MN.

Steve met Shelly Ochs and they blended their families in 2000. They welcomed their only son, Jett in 2002. They were married from 2004-2009. In 2004, they moved to Forest Lake, MN, where they enjoyed water skiing among many outdoor adventures.

In 2023, Steve met his wife, Maria. They married in 2024 and settled in Salt Lake City, UT.

Steve is remembered for his adventurous attitude, sense of humor, and his legacy lives on whenever his children go skiing in the mountains.
