HOSIE, SYLVIA - Sylvia Kilbourne was born in New Jersey on August 31, 1926. She died in Northport, New York September 15, 2025 at the age of 99, surrounded by family. Loving wife of John William ("Bill") Hosie (deceased, 2015) for 67 years. Devoted mother of Cynthia Hosie Gorman (Skip, deceased, 2023,), John W. Hosie, III, Daniel Kilbourne Hosie (deceased, 1997), Jane Hosie-Bounar (Khaled), Nancy Hosie Pierce (Keith). Loving grandmother of Matt (Eileen) and Bitsy (Steven); Willie, Katie (Ashlea), Josiah, and Jerry; Maya and Anya; Amanda (Mark), Colin (Nicole), Cameron (Alicia), and Parker. Great grandmother of Bridget, Ellis, Roman, and Sebastian.
Sylvia earned her bachelor's and master's degrees at Cornell University, where she was President of the Women's Self Government Association, and where she met her husband, Bill. They were married in 1948. Because of her leadership skills, she was featured in Life Magazine on June 7, 1948 and on the cover of What's New in Home Economics' February, 1949 edition. The Life journalist referred to her as a "girl," which irked her. She wrote to correct him, and told him she was a woman about to get her master's degree in Nutritional Science. After graduation, she worked as a Public Health Nutritionist for the American Red Cross in New Jersey, providing nutrition counseling to low-income families. She and Bill moved to New York in 1950, where they started their family. She raised five children and taught full-time in the Northport-East Northport School District for 19 years. Sylvia's many volunteer activities included President of the local chapter of AAUW, President of Delta Gamma, President of Delta Gamma Alumni, reading for the blind, contributing to the Guide Dog Foundation, working in the Trinity Thrift Shop, teaching Sunday school and playing piano for the children's service, caring for her mother's elderly friends, and always stepping up to help anyone she knew who was in need. Sylvia loved many things, but most of all she loved dancing with her husband Bill. (If you ever had the privilege of seeing them dance, you'd know why.) Memorial service at Trinity Episcopal Church in Northport, NY at 11am on October 18. Donations in her memory can be made to the Ecumenical Lay Council Food Pantry, First Presbyterian Church, 330 Main Street in Northport, NY 11768; Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 Main Street, Northport, NY, 11768; or Retired Teachers of Northport: R-UTN c/o Donna McGinn, 2 Furwood Ct, East Northport, NY 11731.
