Thomas Jay Szelest, 79, passed away on September 4, 2025, in Chesapeake, VA. Born on April 8, 1946, Tom dedicated 37 years to the Army Corps of Engineers, where he was recognized with three Commander's Civilian Service Awards and numerous accolades from both governmental and private sectors. His career culminated at the Seattle District Corps of Engineers, marking an end to a distinguished tenure.
Tom's education spanned from Roselle Elementary in Illinois to Maury High School in Virginia, followed by higher studies at VA Tech and Old Dominion University. Despite his aspirations, Tom was unable to join the military due to diabetes, yet his commitment to service shone through his extensive civil work.
He married Fayeelaine in Knox Presbyterian Church, a place where both found spiritual solace along with First Presbyterian Church in Norfolk. Tom's personal life was enriched by his hobbies, which included bowling, skeet shooting, darts, golf, and especially dancing and camping with loved ones. His travels with Fayeelaine, notably their memorable trip to Ireland, were cherished chapters of his life.
Tom was a beacon of kindness, always greeting friends and strangers alike with a warm smile. He is survived by his wife, Fayeelaine Haddaway; children, Tonya Lee Binion and Timothy Phelps; grandchildren, Olivia Tucker, Tessa Phelps, Elizabeth Ulfers, and Tanner Phelps; sister, Barbara Starnes; and niece, Deanna Wesson. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ted and Janet Szelest.
A Celebration of Life will be held on November 29, 2025, at the Retreat at Greenbrier Clubhouse. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Association and the American Cancer Society, reflecting Tom's compassionate spirit and his battle with diabetes and Cancer.
