Velma Thomas Ramirez, 88, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 2, 2025 at Mid Valley Nursing & Rehab in Mercedes, TX. She was born on June 10, 1937, to Isaac and Estella Thomas in Mercedes, TX.

Velma was known for her joyful spirit and love of laughter. Despite the difficulties she encountered in her life she could always be found joking around with everyone. Her laugh was infectious. She was a beloved mother, devoted grandmother, loving sister, and a wonderful friend. A woman of unwavering faith in the Lord, she was a devout parishioner at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. She instilled the love for God in all of her family. She also loved food and dedicated many years of service to the Mercedes ISD as a cafeteria worker. Velma had a zest for life. She delighted in all festivities, especially family quinceaneras, weddings, and dancing the night away at bailes. Christmas was extra special with her beautiful Christmas village, which she cheerfully displayed every year. She will be remembered fondly by all the time she spent caring for her birds, singing Elvis Presley songs to her loved ones, her sweet tooth, her amazing sense of humor, and her tenacious personality.

She was preceded in death by her beloved grandson, Cory Ramirez, her parents, Isaac and Estella Thomas, and her siblings, Ida Carmona, Isaac, Robert, Tomas, and James Thomas.

She is survived by a loving family, including her brother, Jesse Thomas, sister, Dolores Dominguez; her daughter, Velma R. Cortez, and sons Mario, Roy, Raul, Ricardo, Ruben, Robert, and Reynaldo Ramirez, more than 25 grandchildren, and numerous great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be held Monday, October 6, 2025 from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Garcia & Treviño Funeral Home, 439 S.
