Vernon Slagle, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on October 3, 2025, at the age of 88.
Born in Yakima, Washington, on September 22, 1937, Vernon grew up with a love of learning, laughter, and determination. In his youth, he was a Golden Gloves boxer, known for his focus and grit — qualities that would serve him throughout his life. He attended Eastern Washington University, where he earned a degree in English.
After graduation, Vernon moved to Los Angeles, where he taught English at a junior high school for two years — a brief but meaningful time that reflected his natural ability to engage and inspire others. It was in Los Angeles that he met the love of his life, Maureen, at a local dance hall. The two fell in love while dancing to The Peppermint Twist and were married on July 21, 1962. A year later, their adventures took them to New Zealand, where their first daughter was born.
Returning to Seattle, Vernon began a long and successful career in sales in the textile industry. He started at The Bon Marché and became a regional manager for a wholesaler, selling to interior design firms, hotels, and furniture stores throughout the Northwest. His natural charisma, integrity, and genuine interest in people made him a trusted partner and friend to many in the business.
Together, Vernon and Maureen also found success in real estate, buying and improving several homes over the years. Their teamwork, eye for opportunity, skilled design, and shared sense of adventure made each project a new chapter in their story.
Vernon's humor, wit and ability to make others laugh came effortlessly. He loved a good party, a lively conversation, and a friendly game of tennis — all occasions that reflected his social spirit and playful charm.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maureen (2024); his brothers Gene, John, and Jim; and his sister Nathalie. He is survived by his brother Thomas; his daughters Susan Slagle (Alex Alben), Celina Calado (Brian) and Gabrielle Meyertholen (Darin) and his grandchildren Jacob, Thomas, and Finn, who brought him endless pride and joy.
Vernon will be remembered for his warmth, wit, curiosity, and love of life — for his easy laughter, his kindness, and the way he made every gathering a little brighter.
