He was born in Zurich in 1936 during the depression and soon became interested in the culinary arts. Much like the first move on a chessboard, he began his training as a chefâbold, focused, and full of promise.

The knight moves toward the center, preparing to support and defendâearly strategic growth.
Wernerâs culinary journey led him from Switzerland to the heart of Manhattan, where he became a fixture of excellence and warmth at the Hilton for 40 years. He rose quickly to Banquet Manager, developing his career with precision and grace.
â 3. Bc4 â Aiming for the Heart
The bishop targets the center, bringing elegance and pressureârefined and purposeful.
A true adventurer, Werner embraced life with daring:

⢠Scuba divers all over the world

â He and his wife, Raquel, fulfilled their dream of living aboard a houseboat at the 79th Street Boat Basin, where Werner spent half his life and built a community of cherished friendships.

Castling protects the king and connects the rooksâcreating stability and security.
Wernerâs sanctuary was not only the waterâit was his home, filled with love and laughter. His loyal companion, Leo the African Gray Parrot, was always by his side, a reflection of Wernerâs gentle spirit and steady presence.

The rook moves to a central file, ready to support future plansâpoised for impact.
Every Sunday, Werner gathered with friends to play chess or taught the game at the Jewish Community Center on the Upper West Side. He was a brilliant strategist, viewing the world as a chessboardâcomplex, elegant, and full of possibility. On the Regis and Kelly TV show, Werner earned the only draw when an 11-year-old simultaneously defeated the other nine chess experts.
âď¸ His humor was sharp, his mind sharper, and his love for the game unmatched.

Werner is survived by:
⢠His devoted wife of 45 years, Raquel
⢠Nephew Martin, niece Monica
⢠Niece-in-law Claudia
⢠Grandnephew Joel
Their lives are forever enriched by his wisdom, kindness, and laughter.

Though he has departed, Wernerâs legacy of brilliance, bravery, and empathy lives on. His friendships span decades and continents, each one a testament to a life well-lived.

Werner Buhrer passed away after a long illness at the age of 88.
