Wesley Hampton Barnard

1966 - 2025

Send Flowers Plant A Tree
Wesley Hampton Barnard went to be with Jesus and receive his glorified body on October 11, 2025

Wesley was born on December 28, 1966, in Okinawa, Japan - the firstborn of Wesley Eugene Barnard and Yasuko Katsuren Barnard.

Despite a doctor’s error during his delivery that resulted in severe cerebral palsy, Wesley’s spirit and strength could not be diminished. For 58 & 3/4 years, he did far more than simply survive--He Thrived.

Wesley had the good looks of both his mother and father and the energy of an extrovert (like his dad). He lit up whenever someone he loved entered the room and he, in turn, brought joy and laughter to everyone around him. With his ever-present tongue extended, deep dimples, and smiling Asian eyes, Wesley could light up any space.

He loved sunshine, traveling, vacations, theme parks, good music, television, and being surrounded by people who cared for him.

For 42 years, Wesley made his home at the Sunrise Community in Bartow, Florida, where he was the very first resident. The staff and residents there became his family, and their love and devotion shaped his beautiful life.

Though Wesley could not speak words, walk, or enjoy many of the things we take for granted, he taught everyone who knew him what truly matters. He didn’t earn degrees, win awards, or acquire possessions--instead, he lived a life free from the trappings of this world.
“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” — Matthew 5:8

Wesley endured multiple surgeries, illnesses, and challenges, yet his determination and strength were unwavering. His perseverance was a living testimony to the power of faith and love, and the courage and grit that he inherited from his parents. He was a fighter!

We take comfort knowing that Wesley has been made whole in the presence of Jesus--running, leaping, and dancing with his new glorified body, just as Scripture promises:
“Then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy.” — Isaiah 35:6
“He will wipe every tear from their eyes… There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain.” — Revelation 21:4

Wesley’s life was a gift — a pure reflection of God’s joy, humor, and grace. He was the strongest person his family has ever known, second only to his parents.

Wesley is survived by his parents, Wesley Eugene Barnard and Yasuko Katsuren Barnard of Nashville, TN; his sisters, Stephanie Barnard Lee (Brian Lee) and Beth Barnard Barcus (Blaine Barcus); and his niece and nephews, Jude Wesley Barcus, Kenya M. Barcus, and Micah B. Barcus. He is also survived by six cousins, an uncle, aunt, and countless family members at the Sunrise Community in Bartow. There were many family members and friends welcoming Wesley into eternity.

The staff at Sunrise cared for Wesley around the clock and poured out love, blessing, and friendship. He enjoyed an incredible quality of life filled with joy, laughter, and belonging.

In lieu of flowers, the family would be deeply moved and Wesley would surely smile--if you feel led to give in his memory to support the continued care of his dear friends and fellow residents at the Sunrise Community of Central Florida (Bartow), and the devoted staff who will forever be family. Be sure to select Bartow location and Wesley Barnard’s name in the tribute.
