William Louis LeConte, Sr. (Lou), passed away on October 29, 2025 in Catonsville, MD, at the age of 92. Lou was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on September 7, 1933, to his parents, Joseph and Delia LeConte. Delia passed shortly after giving birth to Lou, and his father remarried and had 3 more children, Elizabeth (Betty), Virginia (Ginny) and Joseph (Joe). Lou is survived by his wife Della; his three siblings; his three sons, William Louis LeConte Jr., Brian Henry LeConte, Robert Jeffrey LeConte; his step-children, David Gilliss and his wife Apryl, and Carla and her husband Craig; and his ten grandchildren, Brian Henry Jr., Bailey, Peyton, Colette, Delaney, Kylie, Audrey and Evan LeConte, and his step-grandchildren Jennifer and Josh.
Lou grew up in Atlanta and Athens, Georgia. At 18, he joined the United States Navy during the Korean War. He met our Mom at a USO show in Baltimore, married her in 1954, and they moved to Atlanta where he attended Georgia Tech on the GI Bill. He graduated with a Civil Engineering degree a few years later. Upon graduation, they moved to Port Arthur, Texas, where he worked at Texaco for four years. In early 1962, Lou got a job at Baltimore Gas & Electric Company, they moved back to Maryland, and settled in Ellicott City where they raised their 3 boys. In the 1970's, Lou attended the George Washington University and graduated with a Masters in Personnel Management. In addition to his day job, he taught Personnel Management classes at Catonsville Community College. In 1985, Lou was re-married to Della, and remained in Ellicott City near his previous home. Lou worked at BG&E until 1994 when he retired.
He was a great dad, who loved travel and the outdoors. He was an avid tennis player, bowler, photographer and motorcycle rider. He spent many "dad" years with his boys in boy scouts, sporting events, family events, and serving as an elder in his church. In the 1970's, Lou and family spent 5 weeks each summer over two consecutive years traveling to all 48 lower states in a travel trailer. Lou/Dad/Uncle Lou/Pop Pop was that guy with the camera and always had great pictures of all of our life events. Lou was very proud of his LeConte heritage and spent lots of time documenting our family tree and making sure we all knew where we came from, and that our LeConte ancestors set foot on American soil in 1654, and that our name continues today.
In retirement, Lou and Della spent years traveling the world. His photographs of places they visited were amazing. He continued to enjoy motorcycle riding, tennis and bowling. He spent years as "Where's Lou" writing for the local newspaper visiting many local historical sites.
William Louis LeConte Sr. will be buried at the Baltimore National Veteran's Cemetery, 5501 Frederick Ave., Catonsville, MD 21228, with a Celebration of Lou’s Life following. Once the burial is confirmed with the cemetery, a date will be shared.
