William Louis Strautman, known to many as Bill Strautman, passed away on October 21, 2025, at his Kansas City-area home. He was 77.
Bill was the first-born son of Everett L. Strautman and Margie Beaty Strautman, formerly of Rock Port and Tarkio (Atchison County) Missouri, and, later, Kansas City. He was born in St. Joseph, Missouri, on November 26, 1947.
A graduate of Tarkio High School, Tarkio, Missouri, Bill attended the University of Missouri – Kansas City and Tarkio College, from which he graduated in 1969.
After graduation, Bill worked in a variety of sales-related jobs with Sears, Armour and Company, and Longmont Foods. Later, he worked at Payless Cashways, Kansas City. He entered the federal workforce in the 1980s at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. He joined the Veterans Administration (VA) Kansas City Healthcare System in 1990, working there until 2014. Pre- and post-retirement, he was a weekend greeter, valet, and front-desk receptionist at Claridge Court, an independent senior community in Prairie Village, Kansas, for 10 years. His last employment was with Public Storage, where he worked at several Jackson County facilities across the Kansas City-metropolitan area until 2023.
Bill loved Kansas City and knew more about Kansas City history than most residents. He was a frequent guide for visitors to the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum in Independence. He was a decades-long member of Unity Village Temple on the Country Club Plaza.
Bill’s parents predeceased him, Everett in June 1985, and Margie in February 2025. Three siblings survive him: Randy Strautman and his wife, Marni, of The Villages, FL; Ellen Strautman and her wife, Cheryl Duncan, of Columbia, MO; and Alex Strautman and his husband, Kevin Spier, of Tacoma, WA.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Tarkio College Foundation, P. O. Box 231, Tarkio, MO 64491-0231, or to Unity Temple on the Plaza, 707 W. 47th Street, Kansas City, MO 64112.
