George Martin

George Martin, age 83, passed away peacefully on August 20, 2025. Born May 15, 1942, George was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who brought warmth and laughter to everyone he encountered.

He spent his early years in the Midwest, where he developed a lifelong love of music and storytelling. After serving honorably in the U.S. Army, George pursued a career as a journalist, known for his sharp eye for detail and his dedication to uncovering the truth. His writing inspired readers for decades and earned him the respect of colleagues across the country.

Away from his professional life, George found joy in playing piano, tending to his garden, and traveling with his wife. His greatest happiness came from time spent with family, especially his grandchildren, who knew him as “Grandpa George.”

George is survived by his beloved wife, Eleanor, of 60 years; his children David (Anne) Martin and Rebecca (James) Holt; and six grandchildren who carry forward his spirit of curiosity and kindness.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, August 30, 2025, at First United Methodist Church, followed by a community gathering. The family asks that donations in his memory be made to the Public Library Foundation.
