Ralph Thomas, 87, of Springfield, Illinois, passed away peacefully on April 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 12, 1937, in Quincy, Illinois, Ralph was the second of four children born to Edward and Lillian Thomas. He graduated from Springfield High School in 1955 and proudly served in the U.S. Navy from 1956 to 1960. Upon returning home, Ralph met the love of his life, Margaret “Maggie” Bennett, and the two were married in 1962. They shared 63 beautiful years together.
Ralph worked as a postal carrier for over 30 years, known in his neighborhood for his cheerful whistle, warm smile, and genuine interest in the lives of those on his route. He was a man of quiet integrity, humility, and deep kindness.
He was a lifelong Cubs fan, an avid gardener, and a skilled woodworker. In retirement, he built birdhouses for friends and neighbors and volunteered at the local community garden. Ralph also served faithfully as a deacon at First Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife Maggie; his children, Lisa (David) Morton, James (Angela) Thomas, and Thomas (Elena) Thomas; his sister Carol; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers Robert and Kenneth, and his granddaughter Hannah.
A memorial service will be held on May 3 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, with visitation beginning at 9:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Springfield Food Bank or the First Baptist Church community garden fund.
Ralph’s quiet strength and loving presence will be missed by all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the American Cancer Society to honor Ralph’s memory and support cancer research and care.
